Main Types of Yoga

September 14th, 2008 10:09 pm

Yoga exercises are varied and, based on this variety, many different types of yoga are known. An individual’s choice of the appropriate form of yoga for him or her will depend on several factors among which the key ones are his or her level of fitness, goals, and medical condition. Briefly described below are four main types of yoga.

Iyengar yoga
Iyengar yoga centers on proper alignment and precise body movements. It frequently makes use of props such as blocks or straps as part of the exercises for those who lack body flexibility but also to compensate for injuries. Since it pays great attention to details and the modification of poses, Iyengar yoga is highly recommended for people suffering from back pain or neck pain. Modification to the poses has been very beneficial to such people. Down Dog, Triangle with Block, and Triangle with Chair are some of the commonest poses of Iyengar yoga.

Ashtanga yoga
This type of yoga is commonly termed power yoga due to the fact that it focuses on powerful flowing movements, for example push-ups and lunges, exercises that require strength and stamina. Ashtanga yoga is more appropriate for people who have healed from a back injury and are looking for a more strenuous practice. It is also befitting people who have athletic build like runners and cyclists, and for those who want to attain greater flexibility, balance and greater power of concentration in their exercise routines.

Bikram yoga
Bikram yoga is another of famous types of yoga. It is also known as hot yoga for the reason that its exercises are performed in a very warm room. Bikram yoga is best for arriving at greater flexibility. The role of heat in this is manifest: heat helps body tissues to stretch more easily. However Bikram yoga is not recommended for patients of cardiovascular diseases because of the strain placed on the body while performing vigorous exercises in the heat.

Viniyoga
This type of yoga links breathing and body movement in flowing exercises that are adapted to the individual needs of each person. Viniyoga is often helpful for people having back problems or neck problems because of its adaptability for each person.
Many other types of yoga exist and it is suggested to discuss with the yoga teacher his or her philosophy and emphasis on any particular type before taking a yoga course.
All types of yoga can prove rewarding, life-long activities for better health and body functions as well as mental steadiness. The emphasis on a particular type depends on the individual’s specific needs or purpose.

Yoga Therapy for Better Health

June 21st, 2008 10:08 pm

Yoga therapy has been in practice for centuries as a means of attaining both physical and mental health. This article takes a brief look at the role of yoga as a form of therapy and an example of simple yoga breathing techniques for staying healthy and relaxed.

Yoga Therapy for the Mind

Not only do yoga exercises keep the body in good form but also provide invaluable mental health benefits. Pranayama (or control over breathing) has been found a great form of yoga therapy for checking negative emotions. Clinical evidence reveals that alternate nostril breathing, as practiced in yoga, creates a positive balance in the two hemispheres of the brain and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Yoga therapy, based on breathing, also lightens the mood, relieves somberness, and restores mental energy. In fact, yogis regard psychotherapy as the modern form of yoga therapy.

Yoga and Food
.
A study of the American Cancer Society in 1999 found that more than one-third of all the cancer deaths occur due to bad nutrition. Developing healthy eating habits can prevent these and yoga therapy can be of great value in this matter. It has a centuries old eating philosophy centered on balanced whole-foods diets. These principles were the cause of the longevity of ancient yogis (over a hundred years usually).

Yoga principles advocate that foods should be taken in as much of their natural state as possible (hence the name whole-foods) and should not be processed much before use. Such diet makes possible the three functions of digestion i.e. absorption, assimilation, and elimination.

Simple Yoga Therapy via Breathing

While yoga breathing exercises are invaluable in their effects, many of these do not require hours of practice. These take only a few minutes and yet keep the body and mind healthy. Following is one such series of breathing exercises that take only six minutes to complete. Follow this regularly, daily, and you can feel a clear improvement in your energy and ability to function. However, this exercise should not be performed by people suffering from cervical problems.

Start by resting your arms on the sides. Rotate your shoulders, first clockwise and then counterclockwise, five times each. Bend your head as if trying to touch the shoulders. Repeat it five times on each side. Then bend the head forward and backward alternately. Keep the neck erect and, while bending forward, press the chin against the neck.
Now close your eyes and let your mind relax. Breathe normally, while remaining conscious to the inhalation and exhalation. Feel the movements of your breathing. This technique is wonderfully de-stressing.

Closing your eyes, take deep gentle breaths. Feel the incoming air from the bottom i.e. stomach upwards to the top of the lungs. Now exhale the air, letting it out first from the top and then downward from the stomach. Repeat this ten times, using ‘imagination of breathing in fresh oxygen’. Remember, that a standing position is best for this exercise.

How to Find a Yoga Studio

June 14th, 2008 10:08 pm

If you are interested in practicing yoga, there are a few steps that you will have to take before you can actually get yourself started. For instance, you will need to get all of the essential supplies, such as clothing, a yoga mat, props, and you will also have to find a yoga studio where you will be able to go for your classes.

How do I Find a Yoga Studio?

If you are looking for a yoga studio, the most important factor that you first need to consider is the distance from the yoga studio to your house; you want it to be close enough that you will not have to worry about spending a great deal of time simply to get there, as yoga is supposed to be relaxing and you do not want to involve any factors that would make it otherwise, such as having to get stuck in traffic every time you go to a class.

However distance is not the only factor that you have to consider when it comes to finding yourself a yoga studio. For instance, you will want to do your research and make sure that the yoga studio you are interested in is qualified and that they are experienced and considerate, and that the staff is friendly and established; these are not the only things that you will want to think about.

Truly consider the amount of time that you will be spending at your yoga studio, and you will realize the importance of putting so much consideration into your overall decision on which studio to go with. A good idea is to even go into the studio one day and mingle with both the customers and the staff, basically to get a general feel of the place and to see if it is the type of environment that you would enjoy spending time in.

Regardless of all the thought that you have to put into it however, remember that the most important thing of all is that you have fun, and so make sure that you find a studio that is entertaining, amusing, and simply where you enjoy spending your time. This will not only make the entire process more enjoyable, but will also make you look more forward to your classes altogether, therefore making the time and effort that was spent completely worth it.

Yoga Retreats: a Unique Vacation Opportunity

June 7th, 2008 10:07 pm

Outside of those few extremely dedicated yoga practitioners, few people know that there are actually entire retreats dedicated to yoga and learning more about yourself and expanding your yoga practice. Even fewer people know that you don’t need to have dedicated your life to yoga to go to a retreat—there are retreats from beginners all the way up through masters. And most of the time, they are all in the same place.

A yoga retreat is exactly what it sounds like—an extended stay away from home where the primary focus of the stay is on increasing your yogic abilities and releasing stress while meeting those with similar interests as yourself. Yoga retreats vary in price, but you can expect to spend what you would normally on a weeklong vacation in a hotel.

Most of the time, yoga retreats have include both room and board as many focus not only on physical activities, but also on how to fuel those activities, so they tend to have very specific foods they would like you to eat during the retreat. So, the price is typically all inclusive—you pay one price and that’s all.

Where to Find Yoga Retreats

You can find yoga retreats just about everywhere. From the east coast to the west coast there are a plethora of retreat locations, and thus there is mostly one relatively close to you. If you’d prefer to be at a little more exotic locale, there are yoga retreat locations in the Caribbean, Virgin Islands, Europe and Asia. Keep in mind though that these locations are likely to be significantly more expensive than a domestic retreat.

As with most things, the best resource for doing research on yoga retreats will be the internet. Check out www.yogasite.com as this website has a large list of yoga retreat locations around the world, and links to other online resources for you to continue your research and find the perfect retreat.

If you are interested in yoga, whether you’ve just begun or have been involved for years, a retreat is a good way to expand your knowledge and decide whether you want to pursue your yoga training. It should not be assumed that only certain fanatics go on yoga retreats, but rather realize that they are open to everyone to help those who have the desire to learn. Go ahead, enjoy yourself!

Types of Yoga Postures

May 30th, 2008 10:06 pm

Yoga postures are called Asanas, literally meaning seats. Originally, the asanas were used as stable postures for prolonged meditation. These postures are not confined to just stretching of body parts but open, what the yogis believe, the energy channels (charkas) and psychic centers of the body. These purify the body and provide greater control and balance to the mind.

In practicing yoga postures, the breathing should be slow and deep. Usually Dirga (or Ujjiayi) or Pranayama style of breathing is performed. The positions of yoga are firm yet relaxed. So if you feel pain, strain or fatigue at any point, it is an indicator that all is not well with your postures. Consult your yoga instructor for improvement. Six important types of yoga postures are generally known, depending on the main position of the body: seated, standing, supine, prone, balance, twisting.

Seated Postures

Seated postures are especially suitable for the beginning level. Most of these are easily adapted to any level of body strength or flexibility. Seated postures make use of a variety of positions like Table, Dog Tilt, Cat Tilt, Staff, Inclined Plane, Seated Twist, Seated, Angle, Child, Caterpillar, Head to Knee, Prayer Squat, Low Lunge, Pigeon, Full Lotus, Hero, Crab, and Gate postures etc.

Standing Postures

Standing yoga postures are meant to enhance both strength and flexibility of the body. These postures are among the most advanced of asanas. Various standing postures include Five Pointed, Star, Dancer, Warrior Angle, Forward Fold, Side Plank, Half moon, Mountain, Goddess/Victory Squat, Jackknife, Standing Angle, Prayer Twist, Pyramid/Runners, Stretch, Tree, Standing Backbend, Triangle, Standing Squat, Warrior (having three main postures), and Eagle.

Supine Postures

These yoga postures are done while lying on the back with face up. These are great to end a session of the yoga practice. Supine postures release stress and bring flexibility. Knee Down Twist, Fish, Bridge, Plow, Wind Relieving, Half Wind Relieving, Half Supine Diamond, Supine Diamond, Wheel, Half Bridge etc. are some important supine postures.

Prone Postures

Prone postures are belly down postures. These build core body strength in the low back and abs. These postures are simple enough for beginning level but still quite challenging to hold long. Bow, Half Bow, Cobra, Frog Pose, Threading the Needle, Locust, Boat, and Crocodile are the most significant of prone postures.

Balancing Postures

Balancing postures are the key to improving memory and concentration by engaging the whole of your mind and body. Keeping the eyes focused on a single point is central to all of these yoga postures. Many postures are included in balancing the body like Warrior, Dancer, Eagle, Balancing Table, and Side Plank etc.

Twisting Postures

Twisting postures play a role in realigning and lengthening the spinal column, and also in stretching and opening of the back muscles. Prayer Twist, Seated Twist, Revolved Triangle, Knee Down Twist, Half Moon Twist etc. are the main positions in these postures.

May 25th, 2008 6:43 am

Yoga wear includes tee shirts, pants, sweaters and even bags. These are some things you can’t live without when doing yoga. It is important that you have this kind of yoga wear in order to be able to perform the practice without the worries and hassles.

Students who are teenagers are very particular with yoga wear. It is something they consider as an accessory in yoga. For them, without nice clothes, they just couldn’t practice well.

That is common to all yoga practitioners. Of course you need to have a good yoga wear and outlook so that you will have that confidence when you make poses and exercises. It should be at the best level so that you get to perform well and not feel conscious or embarrassed when you are in the class.

Yoga wear should not be costly and should not eat up your budget because yoga is not meant to be an expensive exercise. It only needs to be given a slight expense and should be fair.

If you will be wiser, you can check out the stores all over the place and compare the prices. After you find the best store that sold yoga wear, check it out once in a while and see whether they have new freebies and discounts available.

One of the best power yoga instructors is Bryan Kest. But even if his studio is in California and even if we live in far places we could still practice with him by using his videos.

May 23rd, 2008 6:43 am

We could also choose which practice we should do and base it in what we need at a specific time.

It might focus on stress reduction, one that helps our upper body, or one that helps build our core.

It might also focus on what suits our physical situation such as pregnancy yoga or yoga for seniors.

And lastly in this practice of yoga videos we could modify the postures according to our physical conditions. For example if we have an injured foot and we can’t put any pressure on the front of it we should modify a number of poses such as the Plank Pose ( in where we need to put our knees down so we wont bear our entire weight of our body on our forefoot only).

Sometimes it takes a lot of extra movements to get into our desired positions because of our injuries especially if we are on a regular class with other persons. Moreover, Yoga videos offer variety and assortment. One can easily get bored doing the same practice over and over again for how may sessions.

The interest and enthusiasm is lost when there is a lack of diversity and mixture. With these Yoga videos, one can choose and pick from a variety of videos that would perfectly fit one’s mood or condition. After all, Yoga is a form of relaxation and mediation, and not an irritating activity or past time.

With these videos, one can enjoy his or her own favorite posture or physical exercise. And you can play them or practice them as long as you like without restrictions and delays.

You get to choose when and where you want to do it. Aside from that, you get to enjoy and feel like you really are relaxing and you, feeling the essence of Yoga. Some say it’s like being in heaven ahead of time.

As a result, you will find comfort and enthusiasm that really has to be felt during Yoga activities. Aside from that, getting and preferring these Yoga videos save time and effort.

Some people may not really have enough time and have hectic schedules so this videos are just a few steps away from you plus, it is very convenient to carry almost anywhere without ease. Moreover, going to a Yoga class adds up to a few hours to go there and getting there on time is quite difficult.

Finding a parking space, registering and getting space in class is also troublesome. Sometimes, you end up wasting your time and effort being there without much satisfaction at all.

Understanding the Purpose of a Yoga Position

May 21st, 2008 10:06 pm

Yoga can quite easily be considered as one of the most popular and well-known exercises in the world today, and the best part about yoga is that it can be practiced by anyone, regardless of their age, health, or fitness level. A yoga position is one of the first topics that you will have to learn about if you are planning on beginning the practice of yoga, but rest assured because it is not that difficult to understand.

What is a Yoga Position?

A yoga position is a type of position or stance that is taken during the practicing of yoga; the positions are the keys to yoga altogether, and the most important thing to remember with each yoga position, regardless of which one it is, is to enter and stay in the position slowly and calmly.

There is not only one yoga position but rather many, and they involve simple movements well within the performing capacity of the normal individual and, for best results, the mind and the body of the person must work together and compliment each other. There are basically three different basic types of yoga positions (or asanas), and these are: standing yoga asanas, forward bending asanas, and back bending asanas.

There are many more than these of course, but these are simply the most common and basic. These are the ones which also achieve more elasticity and resilience, as they encompass that of lateral stretching and twisting of the spine.

Then there are also abdominal and lumber asanas, which focus primarily on that of the abdominal organs; the pelvic and lumbar areas to be more specific. Then in order to focus on the arms and wrists, there are the balancing asanas, which focus on just this. These exercises help to strengthen the forearms as well as to have a salutary effect on all of the abdominal organs.

The most important thing to remember while doing yoga – even though it is truly not that difficult – is to take your time, and make sure to always keep track of your own pace. In other words, if you start to feel tired or sore, do not hesitate, simply stop altogether. You must listen to your body and stop when it wants to, and a good idea, as with any other type of exercise, is to start off slow and then work your way up as you progress.

It is said that Yoga is not a series of steps to be followed but an evolving process. Through time, one who practices it is cleansed and aware of his being. As a result, he perceives life as good and does well on many aspects.

May 21st, 2008 6:43 am

Through Yoga, one can practice or improve his body. Furthermore, he can practice controlling his breath and knows self-control. He or she also attains or has the capability to direct his mind and to interact with the object of his concentration. However, one must be dedicated enough in order to achieve these goals and have its corresponding benefits.

Yoga has become a common practice nowadays and has influenced millions around the world. Different classes and groups are found in various cities and regions. The most common form of Yoga is Hatha yoga. This kind of yoga involves breath and body coordinated. Through physical exercise and harmonized breathing, a certain relief and blood circulation is improved.

This can increase one’s vitality, strength and flexibility. Hatha yoga is only one form of Yoga. There are still many other kinds aside from that. Some are fast aerobic Yoga workouts while some are strong precise styles for the fitness conscious people. There are also styles for those who prefer gentle and focuses more on healing.

Yoga is open to all people of different ages, faiths and lifestyles. One need not pay for a personal tutor or attend a prestige Yoga class. There are books and references which you can use if you want to learn Yoga self-taught.

However, you must choose a kind or form of Yoga that is apt for you and your lifestyle. It is also important to know your own qualities so that your learning is guided. It is because each kind of Yoga has its own unique form of meditation.New forms of Yoga are also developed nowadays.

In addition, there are videos and dvd’s available in the market to guide you as a beginner. There are also supplies sold and available when you are already applying or performing the physical activities involved in Yoga. There are videos like Yoga for athletes, yoga for couples, yoga with grace and strength and yoga workout for beginners.

There are various supplies and equipment that can be used while you are into a Yoga session. Equipments like yoga mats, yoga belts, yoga straps and blocks. There are mats that provide support when you are already into the exercise.

hese mats protect and serve as a cushion for you when you are performing on hard floors. They are accompanied with Yoga straps as well as blocks that aid you in your Yoga workout.

In addition, it is advised that you pick clothing that will not prevent you from moving freely. In this way, you can stretch and optimize your flexibility skills.

allowing you to save your energy by exerting less effort on a pose.

May 19th, 2008 6:43 am

Yoga props help people with Medical Ailments and the Elderly to cross their limitations. The props provide support, enabling them to do the poses that their ailments or old age prevent them from doing.

As you might imagine, not much gear is needed for yoga. It is generally practiced in bare feet or socks. You might want to consider a comfortable pair of shoes. Clothing should be loose enough to allow for bending and stretching

Yoga also has its own small set of apparatus. Called “yoga props,” they help make the yoga poses more comfortable, create resistance or give the body something to l ean on or bend over.

But to start with yoga you can just have these basic equipments:

Clothing: Comfortable, breathable clothes are recommended for yoga. You probably want to wear a shirt that is a little bit form-fitting, since in many yoga poses your head comes below your hips and your shirt can slide down.

Any exercise pants or shorts will do, although it’s best not to have super slick lycra- type pants since in some poses this may cause you to slip.

Shoes: Yoga is most often done barefoot, which is great news for those of us tired of carrying a bulky pair of athletic shoes around for after work trips to the gym.

Yoga studios will often request that you leave your shoes near the entrance.

Mats: In gyms and yoga studios, its commonplace to use a yoga mat, also called a sticky mat. The mat helps define your personal space.

But more importantly, it creates traction for your hands and feet so you don’t slip, especially as you get a little sweaty.

The mat also provides a bit of cushioning on a hard floor. If you are just getting started with yoga, you may not want to buy a mat right away. Most studios have mats for rent, usually for a dollar or two per class.

The disadvantage to these mats is that lots of people use them, and they can get smelly between washings. Yoga mats can be purchased for as little as $20, and many studios will allow you to store your mat with them if you become a regular.

Blankets: Yoga studios often have stacks of blankets available for students to use during class. Grab yourself one or two blankets at the beginning of class.

The folded blankets are props to sit and lie on during class. For instance, when sitting in a cross-legged position, it’s nice to put a blanket under your sit bones to elevate the hips above the knees.

They come in handy for all sorts of things during class, and if it’s chilly you can use them to cover yourself during final relaxation at the end of class.

Blocks: Like blankets, blocks are props to make yourself more comfortable and improve your alignment. Blocks are great for standing poses in which your hand doesn’t reach the floor.

Straps: Straps are particularly useful for bound poses if your hands do not reach each other, and for poses where you need to hold onto your feet but cannot reach them.
